For nearly one hundred years, Security House has bookended the eclectic mix of medium rise buildings along North Terrace, including historic buildings in various states of decay.

Empty for some 18 months when purchased by leading Adelaide creatives Australian Fashion Labels, Security House’s dilapidated interior was a rabbit warren of small dark rooms.

Hosking Willis Architecture re-imagined the building as the new headquarters, accommodating corporate teams and a retail outlet.

The redevelopment is an iconic addition to Adelaide’s cultural boulevard.

Situated in the inner city suburb of Wayville, this three storey State Heritage listed property was in a sad state of disrepair when purchased by the owners. HWA were engaged to guide the restoration of the original house and to design contemporary alterations and additions to bring the property up to date with modern living standards. The original curved baronial features of the existing dwelling were incorporated into the fluid forms of the new additions providing a modern link to the past grandeur of this iconic home.

In December 2019 / January 2020 a catastrophic bushfire burnt through much of Kangaroo Island, including Flinders Chase National Park. All buildings at Rocky River, including Postman's and May's Cottages were destroyed, with only the walls remaining to the Cottages.

The original cottages were rebuilt and repainted with limewash, and new walls were left as face stonework. ‘New’ stonework was sourced and recycled from the nearby Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, which was completely destroyed in the bushfire.

Spotted gum cladding was also selected for the additions and will grey off over time to blend with the muted colours of the surrounding eucalypts and undergrowth.

Witnessing the extensive devastation at Flinders Chase following the natural disaster resonated deeply with all members of the project team. The recovery of the Rocky River Homestead has lifted the spirits of the local community and will now allow the history and natural beauty of Flinders Chase to be enjoyed once again the Islanders, visitors and tourists well into the future.

Located within the State Heritage listed Bice Building at Lot Fourteen, this fit out project provides a new home for the Space Weather Services division of the Bureau of Meteorology. Textures, colours and patterns were chosen to evoke connections with the uniqueness of the Australian continent - our desert interiors, endless coastlines bounded by oceans, bright blue skies and starry nights.
